[englisch, 'ɪnsaɪd'aʊtsaɪd'pleɪɪn], spielpraktischer Begriff im modernen Jazz; beim Improvisieren wird der im Thema (Chorus) vorgegebene Harmonieablauf kurzzeitig verlassen (outside), um nach zwei oder vier Takten zur Vorlage zurückzukehren (inside). Damit ist eine größere Freiheit in der Improvisation möglich, ohne die harmonische Basis völlig aufzugeben (atonal). Diese in der ersten Hälfte der Sechzigerjahre aufgekommene Spielweise geht auf John Coltrane (1926-1967) zurück, wie etwa bei dessen LP »A Love Supreme« (1964).
